The Pro-Life GOP Painted Itself into a Corner
The Republicans are trying to erase a woman’s rights yet again!
Gobsmacked is how I would describe my reaction this week in the on-going crusade against pro-choice policies. Now, Alabama’s Supreme Court has ruled that an embryo is actually equivalent to a human child. It matters not whether it’s in a Petrie dish, a test tube, or implanted inside a woman’s uterus. A zygote, embryo, or fetus, or child are interchangeable terms in Alabama.
With this new proclamation, many fertility clinics offering hope to individuals desiring parenthood have shut down for fear of liabilities due to the new law’s ramifications. Think about what might happen if the clinic unintentionally destroys an embryo when an employee drops a tube? And what if the couple decides not to use all of their embryos? Also, what if a divorce occurs and the parties wish to have stored embryos destroyed, are they committing murder? According to Alabama laws, it’s likely.
At the same time, abortion is all but illegal in Alabama, which creates a strange dilemma for Republican lawmakers in the state:
If a woman doesn’t wish to carry a pregnancy to term, she may be forced to by law, but if a woman desires motherhood by undergoing IVF she may not be allowed to by a different law.
