Some are, and some aren't. Some are of the worst, like the Catholic Church priests who molested children and hid behind their religion for protection. Others use their religion to oppress other's beliefs.

I don't think your family was dysfuctional because they were liberal. They were just dysfunctional because of the way they chose to live. I can understand looking for stability and structure in whatever you can believe in, but many people find moralty and decency with a variety of beliefs.
