I see you are in Australia, John. Here in the US, a man found liable for sexual assault (by a technicality not rape because she couldn't prove it was penial penetration) was just re-elected to our highest office. Over 20 women have also accused him of sexual assault, and still the population finds him morally suitable for president.

America doesn't deal well with rape and sexual assault. Most rapists walk, and many blame the victims for their assault. That is what this author noted as 'rape culture.' It is a systematic attempt to silence those who are raped by calling them liars, crazy, and /or concluding they deserved it for drinking alcohol or wearing form-fitting clothing.

As for me, as a young teenager, I just wanted to survive and teetered between denial and avoidance for years. I don't know it that was safer than what the legal system would have had me endure, but one needs to be strong enough to endure the hell the courts will inflict upon a victim, and I just wasn't there.
