I refused an amniocentesis because I was an older mom, financially situated, and 100% certain I wanted him no matter what. I would not trade my son for 10 neurotypical ones. He is the best son for me-- and a wonderful person to have in this world. With that said, it is a long, expensive, difficult road to parent a special needs child.

I refuse to judge a woman who has made a different choice because being put in her situation is a lot like a soldier who has come back from a war deeply traumatized. She did what she had to do in an impossible situation-- just like many soldiers. Of course there are emotions after going through that, but it doesn't mean she didn't make the right decision for herself in the given circumstances. There is a high cost for surviving trauma, and often we blame ourselves for not being more than just a human being trying to make it to the other side of it.
