For me, Annette's character represents the Catholic belief that women morally exist on a binary -- whore or virgin. Once the young men in the story see her as a whore, they degrade her and feel free to gang rape her. Tony proves this point by the awful line he delivers to her character while she is crying, right after she has been raped. Instead of sympathy, he seems to feel she deserves the attack because she dared to want to be sexually active. It's a dispicable attitude I've noted various times throughout my own Catholic upbringing.
That's one of the reasons why I don't follow their church any longer.
