A friend on mine once borrowed $1,000 from me to pay her mortgage. I was in college and near completely broke, but I loaned her the money. Months later, her house went into foreclosure for failing to pay the mortgage. At the time I was working two jobs, including cleaning houses on the weekends, to pay my bills.

When I mentioned the possibility of her cleaning houses or doing child care to earn some money, she said cleaning houses was beneath her. She would never do something like that for money. The irony of me cleaning houses to earn the money she borrowed to pay her bills escaped her and taught me a lesson. If someone feels honest work is beneath them and borrowing from those of us who are willing to work is okay, I offer nothing but well wishes that they can find employment soon.
